Sam Raimi still teasing Evil Dead 4

March 2, 2013

It’s no surprise that wherever Sam Raimi goes, Evil Dead questions are sure to follow. However, while at a Meet the Filmmakers event for his upcoming Oz: The Great and Powerful, Raimi dropped a “pretty huge bombshell” (from Disney’s official transcript):

“I would love to make Evil Dead 4. My brother and I plan to work on the script this summer.”

Now while everyone else on the internet is freaking out with excitement, I say don’t get excited yet.  Why?  Well for over a decade Sam Raimi has been using that line.  No matter what project he’s working on, whether it be the Spiderman trilogy, Drag Me To Hell, or Oz: The Great and Powerful, Raimi is always bothered with the question, “When are you making Evil Dead 4?”.  And instead of just coming out and saying that it’ll never happen, he says he’d like to make it one day and he and his brother are working on the script.  The quote up above from Raimi isn’t “news”, but more like a broken record.  For instance I remember reading an article four years ago where Raimi said he and his brother Ivan were nine pages into the script for Evil Dead 4.

FANS WANT EVIL DEAD 4!  They’ve been wanting it for a very long time.  The last entry, Army of Darkness, came out in 1992!  I feel that the window has probably passed on ever seeing it happen, especially with the remake coming out soon.  Raimi keeps saying it’s going to happen, yet it’s all talk and no progress.

The sequel to Freddy vs Jason was supposed to be Freddy vs Jason vs Ash and it probably would have been epic.  Why didn’t it happen?  Because Raimi didn’t want to give up the rights for them to make the movie.  Then Raimi was going to make Evil Dead 4 when he had free time after Spiderman 2.  Instead he made the mediocre Drag Me To Hell.  Spiderman 3 came out and it was pretty damn bad.

So maybe he’d redeem himself with FINALLY giving the fans what they want and make another Evil Dead sequel… nope.  Instead of giving the fans what they want, his production company remakes the original… COME ON!  I’ll admit that the trailers for the remake do look pretty good, but without Bruce Campbell (possible unrelated cameo) or even an Ash character in the movie, why even call it Evil Dead?

Anyway I had to let out some “nerd rage” because this is a problem I’ve had with Sam Raimi for years now.  The Evil Dead and it’s sequels are some of my favorite movies and I would love to see an Evil Dead 4, but I don’t think it’s going to happen.  Every couple years Raimi says it’s going to happen, but then he goes off and makes something else.  Mr. Raimi if you’re really going to make it, then make it already.  If not, admit that it isn’t happening and stop getting Evil Dead fan’s hopes up.  At this point, it’s as if you’re playing some sick game with people’s heads.

The lesson here is believe it when you see it…
