The Hobbit grosses over one billion dollars

Now that the film is out in China, Warner Bros.’ The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has grossed $1 billion in the worldwide box office.  The Peter Jackson directed prequel has grossed $301.1 million domestically and nearly $700M worldwide.  An Unexpected Journey is the 15th movie in history to cross one billion dollars, and the fourth film of 2012 to do so (the others being Marvel’s The AvengersSkyfall and The Dark Knight Rises).  It’s also the second highest grossing Lord of the Rings/Hobbit film, behind 2003’s The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King, which grossed 1.2 billion.

As previously reported, The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug is set for December 13th, 2013, and The Hobbit: There And Back Again has been changed to December 17th, 2014.  An Unexpected Journey comes out on Blu-Ray March 22nd.
