Casting News: “The Town That Dreaded Sundown” Remake

April 30, 2013

Young newcomer Travis Tope, pictured below, has booked the male lead opposite Addison Timlin in MGM’s THE TOWN THAT DREADED SUNDOWN.

Ryan Murphy and Jason Blum are producing the remake of a 1976 horror thriller which is being directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon.

The story centers on a rural Texarkana town that was stalked by a serial killer in 1946. The maniac was never caught and in 2013, he comes back.

Timlin plays a young high schooler being raised by her grandmother who’s targeted by the mysterious killer. Tope will play a classmate who befriends Timlin’s character, and decides to make a documentary about the search for the killer.

The pic begins shooting in May in Louisiana.

The original film isn’t that well known.  I couldn’t find a copy of it and had to watch it online years ago.  The only reason I watched it was because the “bagged head” look from this movie is what inspired Jason Voorhees’ look in FRIDAY THE 13TH: PART 2.  I really can’t remember much about the film.  Therefore, I’m okay with them remaking this movie.  It’s not that well known or that great of a movie.  It’s an interesting idea that the first time around was a dud, but could work given another chance.  I’m sick of well known and well made movies getting remade just because of name recognition that end up being forgettable.
