Official “Avengers 2” Title Reveals New Villain

July 22, 2013

The biggest news coming from the Marvel panel is that we now know why The Avengers will be reassembling in 2015.

Joss Whedon ended the hour-long panel by showing a teaser trailer of what appeared to be Iron Man’s mask getting destroyed by an unseen force. Then the cast from The Avengers begin talking about how they aren’t a team, they’re a “time bomb”. As the camera pulls back, we see the mask is not Iron Man at all. Who is it?

THE AVENGERS 2: THE AGE OF ULTRON then flashes across the screen.

The lights go up and every fanboy just messed their pants. Why? Because Ultron opens up a multi-universe full of possibilities.

The Age of Ultron is a ten-issue comic series written earlier this year partially by Neil Gaiman. The story centers around the robot Ultron, and his attempt to take over the world by hanging out in the future and using his creation, the android Vision, to destroy the present.

The backstory dates back to Avengers #54 in 1968. Ultron was created by Hank Pym (Ant-Man) who will have his own solo movie released in November, 2015. Pym uses his own brain waves and adamantium (the stuff that makes Wolverine indestructible) to create the robot.

Eventually Ultron becomes self-aware, rebels against Pym, brainwashes him, and then tries to take over the universe.

However, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige said the title is “borrowed” from the comic book, but “bears no relation to it”.

That’s kind of a bummer because The Age of Ultron takes place after Ultron and his Sentinels have already conquered the world. Looks like we won’t be seeing that story unfold.

Also, The Avengers 2: The Age of Ultron comes out six months before the Ant-Man movie. So where does Ultron fit into the Ant-Man movie?

So many questions, but time will reveal all.
