James Spader Cast As Ultron In “The Avengers 2”

August 29, 2013

Marvel has announced that James Spader has signed on to play the villain in writer/director Joss Whedon’s THE AVENGERS 2: AGE OF ULTRON.

No word on if Spader will perform motion-capture to play the evil robot (as Mark Ruffalo does for The Hulk), or simply provide the character’s voice.

Joss Whedon recently went into some details with EW about what we can expect from Ultron in the sequel.

“As a character I love [Ultron], said Whedon, “because he’s so pissed off.”

“I knew right away what I wanted to do with him,” Whedon added. “He’s always trying to destroy the Avengers, goddamn it, he’s got a bee in his bonnet. He’s not a happy guy, which means he’s an interesting guy. He’s got pain. And the way that manifests is not going to be standard robot stuff. So we’ll take away some of those powers because at some point everybody becomes magic, and I already have someone [a new character, Scarlet Witch] who’s a witch.”

Ultron was created by Hank Pym (Ant-Man), but Ant-Man, a film being co-written and directed by Edgar Wright (The World’s End), won’t be out until after the Avengers sequel. So will Ultron’s origin story be changed, or will Pym show up a little early? Rumor is that Tony Stark (Iron Man) may be responsible for the creation of Ultron in the Avengers sequel.

The film hits theaters May 1st, 2015.
