Michael Shannon To Play Elvis Presley In Elvis/Nixon Film?

September 11, 2013

Instead of hailing General Zod, I guess we should be hailing the King?

Showbiz 411 is reporting that Michael Shannon (Man of Steel, Boardwalk Empire) is “said to be signing on to play Presley” in a film about the late King of Rock n’ Roll and his famous meeting with President Richard Nixon in 1970.

It’s unclear if this is the same project as Elvis & Nixon, which was going to star Eric Bana and Danny Huston. That project fell apart back in 2011 and was going to be Cary Elwes’ (The Princess Bride, Saw) first feature as a director.

The picture is being produced by the Dallas Buyers Club team of Holly Wiersma and Logan Levy.

The encounter between Presley and Nixon also served as the basis for Showtime‘s 1997 movie Elvis Meets Nixon, starring Rick Peters (Dexter) and Bob Gunton (The Shawshank Redemption) as Nixon.

Personally, I don’t think Shannon is the best pick. I think he’s a great actor, but he doesn’t quite have the looks to be Elvis.
