Found-Footage “Friday The 13th” Sequel In The Works?

October 2, 2013

A while ago, Paramount Pictures gained back the rights to FRIDAY THE 13TH and back in June it was reported that a sequel to Platinum Dunes’ remake was in the works… or is it?

Sean S. Cunningham recently reported that the follow-up would not be a direct sequel to the remake. I thought the remake was okay. The first twenty minutes were awesome and I wouldn’t mind a sequel to that film. Since the remake exists, I feel like the best thing to do is move forward with the new series. Doing a sequel to the original series or another reboot would be frustrating at this point.

It is also rumored that the next installment will be a found-footage movie. This rumor has been floating around for a while so the producers haven’t come to a final decision yet. I’d like to see more Friday the 13th films. I feel that using the found-footage “gimmick” this early would kill the new series before it really picks up momentum. As a horror fan, give me Jason Voorhees instead of Paranormal Activity with a hockey masked killer.

I understand that found-footage movies are cheap to make and with the Friday the 13th brand recognition they’d probably make a bigger profit. However, the focus should be on quality. Combined, James Wan’s Insidious films were made for only 6.5 million dollars and brought in hundreds of millions. Give us a gritty story with a smaller budget. It can be done!
