Updates: Leigh Whannell’s “The Mule,” “Insidious: Chapter 3,” And “Saw 8”

Here are some quick updates coming from SXSW concerning screenwriter/actor Leigh Whannell’s upcoming projects including “The Mule,” “Insidious: Chapter 3,” and the status of “Saw 8.”

“The Mule” is a film that Whannell co-wrote with Angus Sampson (Tucker from Insidious), who co-directed the project with Tony Mahoney. Whannell and Sampson also star in the film with Hugo Weaving. The plot revolves around a first time drug mule who is caught by law enforcement.

Producer Jason Blum (Blumhouse Productions) revealed that Whannell’s script for “Insidious: Chapter 3” is finished. “I can say that it’s not dealing with Rose Byrne and Patrick Wilson’s characters anymore,” said Whannell. We thought it would be best to wipe the slate clean and tell a new story. But Lin Shaye will be back and we (Specs and Tucker) will be back. It actually felt a lot like writing the first one because you’re dealing with new characters. You don’t have to follow the throughline of the others, it’s a fresh start. It doesn’t follow the ending of the second one.

Lastly, Whannell revealed what he knows about another “Saw” picture. “You want to know about ‘Saw 8’! I’ve seen a lot of tweets about it. But I haven’t heard anything more about it yet. I don’t think they’re about to go into production on it quite yet, Lionsgate would let me know.

What do you think? Would you like to see another “Saw” sequel or has the franchise overstayed its welcome?
