THR reports that Twentieth Century Fox has acquired the film rights to Flash Gordon, the vintage comic book space hero whose adventures have been brought to television and movies for almost 70 years.

Flash Gordon’s most recent adaptations include a 2007-2008 series on Syfy and a feature film in 1980 featuring Sam J. Jones as Flash and Max von Sydow as his arch-nemesis, Ming the Merciless.

Screenwriters J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay (Star Trek 3) will pen the script based on a treatment by George Nolfi (The Bourne Ultimatum, The Adjustment Bureau).

Producer John Davis (Predator, Chronicle) bought the rights to Flash Gordon from the Hearst Corporation based at Hearst Castle in New York City.

Created by Alex Raymond, the Flash Gordon comic strip began in 1934 and featured an all-American jock, Flash, heading into space with high school love interest Dale Arden and crazy scientist Dr. Zasrkov resulting in a ton of dangerous interplanetary drama on Planet Mongo.
