Johnny Depp In Talks To Play Harry Houdini For Lionsgate

Johnny Depp isn’t doing too well lately. He’s coming off two box office duds in The Lone Ranger and Transcendence. Hopefully that’ll change with his upcoming projects that may include a biopic of legendary magician and escape artist, Harry Houdini.

Depp is currently in negotiations to star as Houdini in Lionsgate/Summit’s The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America’s First Superhero which has Dean Parisot (Red 2) set to direct.

The story, which is said to be in the vein of Indiana Jones, portrays Houdini as not just a master escape artist, but an investigator of the world of the occult. Noah Oppenheim wrote the screenplay, which is based on William Kalush and Larry Sloman’s book of the same name.

Depp is also set to revisit two blockbuster franchises in the coming year with Pirates of the Caribbean 5 and a sequel to Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland titled Through the Looking Glass. Lionsgate is eyeing a November 2014 start, which would push Pirates of the Caribbean 5 to start shooting in early 2015.

Depp recently teamed with Lionsgate on the upcoming film Mortdecai, which will be released February 6th, 2015.

I think Depp would be a pretty good choice for Houdini and he has experience playing real people such as Ed Wood and characters based on Hunter S. Thompson. Do you see it?
