Sonic the Hedgehog is heading to theaters in the form of a live-action/CG-animated movie based on the popular video game franchise started on the SEGA Genesis in 1991.

Evan Susser and Van Robichaux, of the Upright Citizens Brigade, are writing the screenplay for the Sonic film, which will be produced by Neal Moritz (21 Jump Street). Sony Pictures Entertainment and Marza Animation Planet are producing.

The screenwriters are also writing a live-action treatment of The Jetsons.

According to the official press release, the film will capture “Sonic’s irreverent tone and spirit, reuniting him with some of the most revered and infamous characters of the franchise, including the evil Dr. Eggman.”

“Sony Pictures has had great success with hybrid animated and live-action features,” says Marza Animation Planet CEO Masanao Maeda, “and we’re confident that this collaboration will bring a fresh take to Sonic, while still capturing everything that the fans love about him.”

There is no release date scheduled yet.
