“Looper” Director Rian Johnson To Helm “Star Wars Episode VIII”

Well, it looks like J.J. Abrams won’t be returning after he finishes Star War Episode VII. Instead, the new trilogy will be taken over by director Rian Johnson. Deadline reports that Lucasfilm has hired Johnson to write and direct Star Wars Episode VIII. Earlier reports stated that he was writing and directing both Episode VIII and IX, but it seems that isn’t the case. He is only directing Episode VIII, however he is writing a treatment for Episode IX.

Rian Johnson’s credits include Brick (2006), The Brothers Bloom (2008) and Looper (2012) starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis.

Therefore, Abrams is directing Episode VII, Johnson is writing/directing Episode VIII, and Josh Trank (Chronicle) and Gareth Edwards (Godzilla) are directing two of their planned spinoff films outside of the new trilogy. Most of these directors don’t have a lot of credits to their name, but I like that Lucasfilm is targeting younger, promising filmmakers.

The only question now is who will direct the last entry in the new trilogy? Who is another young director that has been turning heads the last couple years? Maybe Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Elysium)? Who would you like to see?
