TheWrap has learned from co-writer Nicole Perlman that James Gunn will return to write and direct a sequel to Marvel Studios’ GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY.

There hasn’t been an official announcement yet since Marvel will be waiting to see how the film performs at the box office before giving the official green light. However, early reviews have been very positive and analysts expect the film to bring in more money than originally thought next weekend.

“They started to figure it out pretty quick when they started getting the reactions from the audience; it was a very positive reaction,” Perlman revealed. “Of course they would want to make a sequel as long as it does well and people are excited about it, they’ll wanna do a sequel. So, it’s going to happen. James will be directing ‘Guardians 2,’ so he would also be writing ‘Guardians 2.”

Additionally, Hero Complex mentions that, “[Kevin] Feige confirmed that Gunn would direct a sequel should Marvel move forward with one.”

So what does Gunn have planned for the sequel? This is what he told Film Divider (potential spoilers)“I know a lot of where I want to go. I have a lot of ideas for stories and characters that are going to appear, and there are documents written up, that some people have, about Peter Quill’s father and his relationship, a lot of stuff about Yondu and a lot of stuff about Drax that nobody knows. There are a lot of things that are part of the overall schematic that already exist, not to mention a lot of stuff about all of the cultures. There’s a lot of stuff about Xandarian and Kree culture that I’ve written down or I have in my head, as well as Krylorians and Ravagers. Kevin Feige has stuff. I wrote up a lot. He knows all the stuff and if I died tomorrow they could go make a movie. They could write the story of Peter Quill’s father and it would all be there. I think Yondu is a very important character, a really important character in this universe, and I think Nebula is really important too and so I think we’ll see more of both of those characters.”

Synopsis: “The movie teams five disparate personalities: Peter Quill (Pratt), aka Star-Lord, was taken from Earth as a 9-year-old, possesses a mysterious orb artifact and pilots the Milano, a muscle car of a spaceship. Gamora (Zoe Saldana) is connected to Thanos, arguably the cosmos’ biggest baddie. Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista) is a muscular dude you don’t want to upset. And then there are the aliens Rocket Raccoon and Groot.

Their stories converge in the space prison Kyln. After the characters break out, they venture to Knowhere (the severed head of a celestial being that serves as a hangout for aliens) and visit the weird menagerie of the Collector (Benicio Del Toro). They also have to avoid two villains, Ronan (Lee Pace) and Nebula (Karen Gillan), who are in hot pursuit of Quill’s orb, which has the power to destroy the galaxy.”

The cast includes Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close, and Benicio del Toro.

Guardians of the Galaxy hits theaters on August 1st, 2014.
