Sony Pictures Planning SPIDER-MAN Spin-off With Female Lead

Sony Pictures may have pushed their future Amazing Spider-Man films from 2016 to 2018, but they’re not giving up on the property and have planned another spin-off film with a female lead.

Deadline reports that the Sony-produced female superhero film is being eyed for a 2017 release. However, it is uncertain who the film will focus on. Felicia Hardy was introduced as Black Cat in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Meanwhile Silver Sable, Firestar, Stunner and Spider-Woman are also “strong possibilities.”

Lisa Joy Nolan (Westworld) has been hired to write the script, with Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach producing. Before 2017, we’ll have the Sinister Six spin-off that’ll hit theaters November 11th, 2016 from writer/director Drew Goddard. The site reports that Doctor Octopus will roundup the team of villains. It also appears that Alex Kurtzman’s Venom spin-off scheduled for 2017 will be titled Venom Carnage, hinting that the two symbiotes may clash.

A female Ghostbusters reboot? A female Spider-Man spin-off? Lucy beats Hercules at the box office? A female wields Thor’s hammer now? This has been a big month for strong female characters.
